In the IELTS Academic reading section, you will be provided with three texts and you will need to provide your answers to a specific task asked related to those texts.

The texts in the reading section can come from:

The topics are for students at a graduate or a post graduate level, and are not in any specialised field wherein the student would find it difficult to understand the meaning of the topic. The topics can be written in different styles of writing; argumentative, descriptive, narrative or discursive. Out of the three texts that will be provided to you, at least one will have a long, logical and detailed argument.

These texts can include pictures, graphs, or diagrams as well to support the main idea of the text.

You are required to read the text, understand the question that is being asked and respond in the answer sheet provided to you. The total time allotted to you for the reading section is 60 minutes. There is no additional time given to you to answer on the sheet, you must do that within the timeframe provided. You will be given 3 texts in the Academic IELTS Reading section, and the total number of questions will be 40.

There are various types of questions that can be asked in relation to each text. These are:

  1. Multiple Choice Question: In an MCQ question, you will be asked a question with four options to what the answer will be. You must choose one of the options that matches the question.

It is possible that you get a longer list of options and that you must select more than one answer. Hence, you should read the instruction for each question really well.

In the IELTS, the answers flow in response to the text. So, an answer for Q1 can be found first in the text, and then Q2 and so on,

  1. True/False/Not given: In a True/False/Not given type of question, you will be given some statements and you must respond with either true (which means the statement holds true in relation to the text), false (which means the statement goes against information in the text), or not given (which means the statement neither holds true nor goes against the information)
  1. Yes/No/Not given: In a Yes/No/Not given type of question, you will be given some statements related to the writer’s opinions and you must respond with either yes (which means the statement is in agreement with the writer’s view), false (which means the statement goes against the writer’s view), or not given (which means the statement is neither in agreement nor against the writer’s view)
  1. Matching information: In this question, there will be specific statements that you have match to different paragraphs. Each paragraph is identified by letters. You must find the paragraph that matches what the question is asking and write the letter associated with the paragraph in your answer sheet. Not every paragraph needs to have a matching statement and some paragraphs can be used multiple times as well.
  1. Matching headings: You will be given a list of different headings or titles which basically summarise the key point of the paragraph in the text. You need to read through each paragraph and match it to the heading that describes it. Not all headings will associate with a paragraph.
  1. Matching features: You must connect a piece of information with features from the text. For example, you would have to match a description of a product to the year of their invention.
  1. Matching sentence endings: In this type of question, you must match the beginning of the sentence that is provided in the question to the ending of a sentence from the text.
  1. Sentence completion: Much like fill in the blanks task, you must fill in the gaps that are provided in a sentence with words that you will choose from the text provided.

In the IELTS, the answers flow in response to the text. So, an answer for Q1 can be found first in the text, and then Q2 and so on.

  1. Summary/note/table/flow chart completion: In this task, you will be required to complete a given summary with the help of the text provided. This summary can be in the form of a flow chart, a table or notes.
  1. Diagram label completion: You will be given a diagram, and you must complete the different labels on the diagram that are blank. You will get the information to fill in these labels form the text provided to you.
  1. Short-answer questions: You will be given a piece of text along with a number of questions. You must answer these questions that require facts or details from the text.

For each answer that you provide, you will be given 1 mark if it’s correct and no marks if it is incorrect. There are 40 q

In the IELTS General reading section, there are three sections which contain 5-6 texts overall. The first section has around two to three short texts. It might contain more if the texts are even smaller. The second section has two texts and the last section will contain one long text.

In section 1, all the texts you will get are related common everyday themes. These are assessing your ability to understand very commonly occurring topics that occur when you live in an English-speaking country.

In section 2, the texts will be more focused on work areas. You will get descriptions of jobs, development manuals, contracts and materials related to training in a work context.

In section 3, you will get just one long text which will be about a general topic of interest in an English-speaking country. This is the section where your writing has to be the most descriptive. You must spend most of your time on this question as it carries more marks and is more difficult than the other sections.
